A Lakeland Garden

A cottage garden connected to the Cumbrian landscape

Project highlights

Project Type: Garden Design

Style: Cottage Garden / Naturalistic

Location: Lake District, Cumbria

The brief

To create a relaxed, productive garden that felt naturally connected to its Lakeland setting and the character of the converted barn. The clients wanted space to grow fruit, vegetables and flowers, alongside places to sit and enjoy the surrounding countryside.

The design needed to make the most of the long, narrow plot – uniting the barn and outbuildings, and creating a garden that felt established, informal and at home in the landscape.

The challenges

Making the most of a long, narrow plot while creating a garden that felt connected to the converted barn and the wider Lakeland landscape, rather than separate from its surroundings.

The design

A series of informal spaces draws you through the garden, combining productive growing areas with relaxed cottage-style planting. Locally sourced materials help root the design in its setting and complement the character of the barn.

The outcome

A relaxed, productive garden that feels at home in the landscape — with space to grow, pause and enjoy the changing seasons and beautiful countryside beyond.

“Vicky created the most incredible garden design for me, which I’m delighted with.

She really listened to what I wanted. I gave her an impossible wish list and somehow she was able to design it all in. She was there for every question, extremely knowledgeable, and has a solution for every problem.”

– K. Ashton, Cumbria

Featured materials & suppliers

Locally sourced natural stone and traditional materials were chosen to complement the converted Lakeland barn and help the garden feel rooted in its surroundings. Cottage-style planting, productive growing areas and natural finishes soften the space and connect it to the wider landscape.
