Feeling frustrated with your garden?
Here are common mistakes that stop gardens achieving the desired effect, and a few ways to fix them.
Forgetting About the Plants
Plants make or break the look of a garden, often more than paving. Different planting styles have specific needs for space, soil and climate. Beds are frequently too narrow to achieve a lush, full look.
If hard landscaping is already installed, consider extending beds, adding another layer or containers, using annual flowers to fill gaps, or adding a vertical backdrop such as screens or climbing plants.
Not Designing for the Specific Site and Household
Start with a clear wish list including practical needs: bin storage, washing lines and a place to wash the dog. Choose materials that wear well in your climate. In damp shade, avoid pale stone that collects algae; choose free-draining surfaces and moisture-loving plants.
Wrong Plant, Wrong Place
Plants may fail because they are not suited to sun, shade, water, soil or microclimate. Shrubs and trees may also simply be too large.
Before planting, determine:
- How hot or cold, sunny or shady, windy or sheltered the area is.
- The soil type.
- How well the soil drains.
Use reputable plant-finder tools and check mature plant sizes. Research before you start will save time, money and heartache.
